“22 a day is too many.” “Honor those who have served.”
With good intentions driving them, these tag lines are everywhere on the internet. From Memorial Day memes to the initiative to bring awareness to veteran suicide by completing 22 pushups a day, there is no shortage of folks who want to support our veterans.
The problem is that memes, and pushups, and social media posts don’t help our veterans.
What these brave Americans need is healing, and the type of healing they need isn’t cheap. Inpatient integrative therapy for PTSD, alcohol and drug abuse, and sexual trauma can cost thousands of dollars in the private sector. With an average wait time of 2 months to get a half-hour appointment with a trauma counselor at the VA, government assistance is overwhelmed and cannot be counted on to meet the extreme need.
Unfortunately, too often, because of debilitating PTSD, and in some cases, accompanying substance abuse, money is not an abundant commodity for the Veterans who need these services the most.
Those of us at Operation22MST know these facts to be true from experience. Sadly, each of us has experienced the aftermath of Military Sexual Trauma personally, in different forms, and in different roles. And each of us has witnessed the current resources fail to adequately address it.
Operation22MST was born out of our personal heartache from being unable to help someone we love, or help ourselves, heal from sexual trauma endured while serving this great nation.
That is why we are asking you, our fellow Americans, our fellow patriots, our fellow CrossFitters, to partner with us to provide these heroes with the help they need. We are asking you to do more than just re-post a meme or a hashtag. We are asking you to dig into your wallets, your pocketbooks, your piggybanks and DONATE!
Please, let’s not abandon those who wrote a blank check with their lives so that we may enjoy the freedoms this great nation provides. In their time of need, let us stand together and show our appreciation by donating today.
